Choosing your wedding dress should feel like an adventure — not a checklist. After capturing countless love stories around the world, we’ve heard it all from real brides: the surprises, the regrets, and the little truths no one tells you about finding “the one.” Here’s what they wish they’d known before saying yes to the dress.

There’s something magical about the moment a bride finds the dress — the one that makes her heart skip, that brings a tear (or a few!) to her best friend’s eyes. But as romantic as it sounds, finding your wedding dress isn’t always a seamless fairy tale. Between Pinterest perfection, budget worries, and that little voice saying “is this really me?”, it can feel a little overwhelming.
After capturing ‘a few’ love stories through our lens, and chatting with brides all over the UK, we’ve picked up a few golden nuggets of wisdom — the things real brides wish they’d known before saying yes to the dress.
You’ll wear your dress for hours — from the nervous excitement of getting ready, to dancing barefoot under the stars. The truth? If it’s not comfortable, it’ll show. Brides told us that the dresses that looked stunning but pinched, scratched, or weighed a ton didn’t make it through the night.
If you can, do a little “wedding day test drive.” Sit, walk, twirl, hug someone. If you can move like yourself, it’s a good sign. You want to feel wild and free — not restricted by a corset that could double as armour.

Movies tell us there should be tears, gasps, and a choir of angels when you find “the one.” But sometimes, the dress you love just makes you feel calm. Sure, some brides have that cinematic moment — others just quietly know, this feels right. Both are equally magical. I didn’t cry when I tried mine on, in fact another bride to be at the NEC wedding show told me it suited me, it was in budget and both my mother and mother in law loved it, so it ticked a few boxes.
Your dress should reflect you — not tradition, not pressure, not trends. One of our brides wore a short lace number and black converse. Another wore a two-piece set she found on Etsy. A third wore a dress she had found packed away that her father had bought before she had even met her husband and months before he died. The story behind the dress is more important than following the ‘trend’.
You’ll look back on your photos (and we’ll be right there capturing them) and love that you stayed true to your own wild, adventurous spirit.

This one’s from us as photographers — think about how your dress moves. Flowing fabrics, light sleeves, and soft textures come alive on camera. You don’t need to pick a dress for the photos, but remember that how it moves can tell part of your story. A wind-catching skirt, a train trailing through wild grass — that’s the stuff of magic. Oh, and don’t forget the pockets!!

Almost every dress needs a little tweak to fit perfectly. Budget for it, expect it, and don’t panic if your first fitting feels “off.” The right seamstress can turn a dress that feels okay into one that feels made for you.

Sometimes you fall in love with a dress early on, then find something later that feels more you. It’s your wedding — not a contract. Trust your gut. This day is about celebrating your love, not proving a decision right.

The morning of your wedding, when you finally step into your dress — take a moment. Look in the mirror, breathe, and really see yourself. The excitement, the nerves, the love waiting just beyond that door — that’s what makes you glow.

Because at the end of it all, it’s not the designer name or the number of layers in your skirt that people remember. It’s you — wild, radiant, in love, and completely yourself.
